 Wireless Solutions
Wireless Wireless everywhere, that seems to be the trend these days. But what does it take to use the full benefits of wireless technology, and more importantly, how can it benefit your company?

Wireless technology has extended to include many aspects of a computer network. It includes anything from high speed internet access lines, to wireless local area networks, to wireless web using mobile phone technology. Although the technology is still in its infancy, it has become very popular in the past few months. The popularity of wireless technology has had different motivations in each field.

Wireless Internet access has become popular because it can provide high speed internet access at speeds that are comparable to T1 or T3 at much cheaper prices. The cost saving is achieved because the companies no longer have to pay the local phone company charges which could be as high as the cost of the T1 access. However the disadvantage is their lack of reliability compared with an actual land line.

Wireless local area networks are not as popular for companies as they are for home and home office use. The main reason for their lack of popularity in the corporate environment is their low speed and short range. However among home/home office users these two are not issues since the bottleneck is normally the bandwidth of the internet connection which is normally much less, and the range would satisfy almost any size home.

And at last the wireless web technology. This technology has grown tremendously due to the low cost and therefore popularity of digital cellular phones. In the recent year a set standard was adapted which defines the method to write web based applications for mobile devices. This standard is based on XML (Extensible Markup Language) technology and is called Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). This standard allows for the display of web pages on portable devices such as cell phones which means that companies may have access to their intranet applications through the cell. Now that is powerful!
